Frustrado com a direção da Igreja, o cardeal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) pede permissão ao papa Bento XVI (Anthony Hopkins) para se aposentar em 2012. Em vez disso, enfrentando escândalos e sua própria insegurança, o introspectivo papa chama seu maior crítico e futuro sucessor a Roma para revelar um segredo que abalaria os alicerces da Igreja Católica.
